Representing Port Huron residents? Are you aware that most of the current City Council members have been actively working to discourage the Plaza expansion? There's been a lot of handwringing about the properties to be taken, and meetings with MDOT pressuring them to reduce the Plaza footprint by a few acres. Meanwhile, almost no effort has been put into working with MDOT to craft a Plaza design that could benefit the City by netting traffic off the Bridge. Is this what you want?If not, contact your City Council members now to let them know what you expect of them. Their phone numbers and addresses are on the contact page. Let them know that you expect aggressive, visionary leadership on the matter of the Plaza and Corridor expansions and the economic outlook for the City as a whole. We need more than just a few phone calls to El Paso - we need a full-court press to seize this opportunity before the window closes. If they're not willing to listen, remember that City Council elections are coming in November. Make this a major issue for City Council candidates. (We hope to be sending out questionnaires to all of them and will be posting the responses we get.) With the full weight of the State and Federal government behind it, the Plaza will probably be built, and it will probably be built in Port Huron. Let's stop deluding ourselves into thinking that we can deflect this if we just chant loud enough. We need to be asking our leaders what are they doing to prepare for the expanded Plaza and Corridor, and how they are working with MDOT and the Federal government to craft an expansion that will work for us. If the answer isn't good enough, we need to find new leaders. |
