Not just a City of Port Huron issue

Even though the Plaza will probably be expanded in the City of Port Huron, all area residents have a say it its construction. This question affects far more than just the City of Port Huron. This project has regional impact, and everyone has the right to voice their opinion on it.

In particular, residents of surrounding communities should be aware that the shortsighted anti-Plaza bias driving some in Port Huron may end up with either the worst outcome (a Plaza design that doesn't help the area at all) or the second-worst (the existing Plaza configuration). Some of us who live in Port Huron are trying to change that, but all area residents can speak to the issue.

What can residents of surrounding townships and cities do? Several things:
  • Educate yourselves in what options are being considered. Learn what the implications of the various plans are.

  • Consider what you'd like this area to become, and how being a major border crossing affects that.

  • Attend the MDOT meetings regarding the plans, and voice your opinions. Remember, even if the Plaza is to be built in Port Huron, all area citizens have a voice in its construction.

  • Speak to your township boards, city councils, and county commissioners regarding the expansion plans and the future of the area. A properly designed Plaza is only the beginning – lots of other plans have to be made and executed!

  • Write letters and op-ed pieces to the Times Herald to counteract its anti-Plaza, anti-MDOT bias.
The water, rails, and roads of the Blue Water Area belong to all of us, not just one city! If they're going to be properly utilized to benefit the entire area, then all area residents have to get involved! We all need to get beyond "pro-Plaza" and "anti-Plaza" stands. There is too much at stake for such simplistic thinking. The decisions we make today will affect this area for generations. We need to be responsible enough to consider them seriously.
